Welcome Back, 90s!

Saint Laurent Paris Pre-Fall 2013

Caroline De Maigret in Chanel
It seems like it was only yesterday that we were wearing plaid skirts and knee-high socks a-la Alicia Silverstone as Cher from Clueless. Or maybe you were a grunge loving skater who wore distressed leather jackets while rocking out to Nirvana's Nevermind album.  Either way, if you were a child growing up in the 90s, you remember the polar extremes in fashion fads!

The fashions of the 90s feel like a distant memory now, one which we are either extremely excited to revisit, or seriously swearing that it never happened. Images of embarrassing hair styles and mismatched outfits are hidden deep in our closets, in shoeboxes-tightly bound and padlocked shoeboxes.  Fortunately, here is our second chance at redeeming ourselves for parading in what once seemed like a good idea (remember Jellies??...Don't worry, we made that mistake too).

Miley Cyrus in Topshop
Currently, and in recent seasons, we've undergone the reemergence of 80s neon and cutoffs, and 70s Boho chic (def one of our favs!).  However, the dominant style decade, as forecasted by all the major fashion houses, and seen in their Pre-Fall 2013 campaigns, is all about the 90s.  For example, Saint Laurent Paris, in their ongoing quest to reinvent themselves, portrays iconic and infamous alternative rock gods and goddesses, such as Courtney Love, Marilyn Manson, and Sonic Youth's Kim Gordon- all representative of an era associated with rebellion, dark discontent, and ripped up plaid and jeans.

From Chanel to Topshop, plaid will become all the rage!  Now, as excited as you may be about resurrecting this look from your childhood, keep in mind that like all things,  trendy pieces should be done in moderation.  Go ahead, get ready to rock the plaid this Fall.  But do so with a basic color block top to avoid being mistaken for a picnic table...not chic.

What are you excited about bringing back from the 90s??

Gatsby Couture

Clockwise: Dior Haute Couture, Chanel Haute Couture, Oscar De La Renta, Chanel Haute Couture
Alexander McQueen
Nina Ricci
Picture a whimsical soiree, one which people drift to in order to lose themselves to a temporary daze, bereft of consequences and responsibilities.  Here, the champagne flows in abundance, and the tipsy buzz of conversation is shallow, serving as a smokescreen deflecting from one's real insecurities. The manner in which the guests flock to these gatherings is the same manner in which they now flee to the backdrop of a rising sun. Found at the heart of this production, our ingenue is surrounded by hundreds of guests, yet feels like she is the only soul for miles.  Our doe-eyed ingenue is Daisy Buchannan of The Great Gatsby.
Miu Miu
The May edition of Vogue, in celebration of the much anticipated release of Baz Luhrmann's rendition of this great American novel, contracted photographer extraordinaire Mario Testino to successfully capture the essence of Mrs. Daisy Buchannan, "Gatsby's bewitching obsession." Carey Mulligan, who will play opposite Leonardo DiCaprio (as if you didn't know that already!) resurrects and portrays Daisy like no other, both on the silver screen and on the glossy pages of the fashion bible. Mulligan, who is draped in jaw-dropping couture pieces we would kill for, transports us back to the Jazz Age, a term coined by F. Scott Fitzgerald himself.  We're talkin' McQueen, Chanel Haute Couture, Dior, ostrich feathers, satin-silk fabrics, and of course, pearls-the quintessential representation of hierarchy and wealth. We're sure that had Ms. Mulligan been alive in the twenties, she would surely have been Fitzgerald's muse...and Coco Chanel's.
We seriously cannot wait to see this film! Mr. Luhrmann, this better be amazing!  Although, we don't doubt that it will.

Mintastic- Spring Color Splash

Here in LA, we're known for having gorgeous weather.  There's nothing quite like cruising down PCH, feeling the sun kissing our skin and the ocean breeze infiltrating our entire being!  Are you imagining it?  Don't you all just want to be California girls? Ok...I'll stop now. Cheesy references are now being filed away.

For this Spring, we have been unusually obsessed with mint & turquoise.  We know it's the usual kind of color you see for such a season, such as coral or cream, but this year mint is in more than ever.  Whether it's the statement necklace, statement ring, or oversized clutch, adding anything from the mint color family makes for a refreshing splash of color. You have been forewarned...if you haven't already, you're about to get obsessed with using, and maybe abusing, this gorgeous hue.

Above, we've compiled a group of gorgeous pieces to jumpstart your new obsession. Are your eyes getting that twinkle yet? We've already picked up a mint skirt, ring, and necklace...our next hunt is for a pair of mint jeans. *Sigh*...love it.

MAXED Out

Some mornings, even the trendiest of us wake up in the kinda mood that makes us want to lounge around in our PJs all day, or worse, leave the house in...*gasp* sweat pants.

Hold it right there!! We know putting in the effort to assemble your ensemble just seems so exhausting at that moment, especially early in the morning, but sweats are not the answer!

The solution to your slothfulness? Maxi skirts.

It's like sweatpants, without the pants part! Sooo comfortable and effortless; the perfect facade for those days when you're really not feelin' dressing up.

Maxis are ultra-chic and super feminine, which is why they are the go-to item in your closet this Spring/Summer season.  Also, a few minor additions make all the difference. Adding a stack of bangles to your wrist, or wearing a few layers of long necklaces enhances your look.  Plus these lengthy skirts give us short girls the illusion of a nice, long silhouette. Tuck your shirt in or leave it loose - either way, you're gonna look good.

The emerging trend this season is not just one slit (think Angelina Jolie), but two! The daring and sexy sister of the traditional maxi has been seen on lots of celebs, like Rihanna and Taylor Swift.  Double the leg, double the sass.  Triple the accidental flash factor.  We're loving this look, but would maybe save it for those nights we're in the mood to put in that effort we didn't feel like this morning.

So, if you wake up tomorrow morning feeling lazy and tired, keep in mind that you don't have to look how you feel.  Grab that maxi, girl.

Trust...you'll thank us later. ;)

Lana Del Luscious on the April cover of L'Officiel Paris

The glow of the setting sun casts shadows over a desolate villa that overlooks acres of Spain's finest vineyard.  A young, mysterious, dark-haired beauty with a full red pout aimlessly wanders the grounds to the sound of soft and lazy guitar strums echoing from somewhere unseen.  When she begins to sing, her voice exudes a haunting sensuality that lures any unsuspecting passerby, making him want to explore the secrets of this lonely location.

At least that's how we imagined the L'Officiel Paris feature shoot to have gone! Ah...Lana..She screams sultry sass siren and it's hard not to get lost in this girl's voice. But let's talk fashion. The outfits in the April spread are DIVINE.  They definitely radiate old Hollywood glamour, a-la Dietrich and Garbo.
For the cover, Del Rey is wearing an exquisite bolero by Ralph Lauren Collection that showcases some intricate stitching and embellishments.  Let's just say, we are in love.

With each turn of the page, you'll find even more drool-worthy fashions.  Think Cavalli, Saint Laurent, Dolce & Gabbana, Vivienne Westwood...*sigh*  Just see for yourself! Proceed with caution...you should be sitting down because you are about to experience Lana Del Luscious at her best.  You have been warned.

Seeing STRIPES

Flipping through NYLON this month, we couldn't help but stop in our tracks when we saw their spread on mixed black & white prints paired together in chaotic matrimony! Totally appropriate considering rockin' sass goddess, Paramore frontwoman Hayley Williams is on the cover.  The spread features funky pieces from Marc Jacobs, Phillip Lim, Rebecca Minkoff, Joe Fresh, and the like, that are reminiscent of the 80s, 90s, and a little bit of Parisienne style.

Usually, we see fresh pops of color in the spring editions in most mags, but then again, NYLON has always had a way of doing their own thing-and we can't blame 'em.  We'd have to say that as much as we love playing with color, we also love seeing these stripes!

Wanna replicate the look?  Then check out our fitted & flattering Striped Trouser pants  and mix it up with some of our too hot-to-trot crop tops found in checkered or striped patterns. Mix, match, and maybe even throw on a splash of color somewhere!
